Night one of the 2020 NFL draft is now in the books, and there was a lot to be excited about for both the fans and players. With all the uncertainty around the sports world right now, it was nice to have a sense of normalcy last night holding the draft. Hunkered down in our houses just like the players, it spoke to the fact that we’re all in this together right now, and eventually it’s all going to pass. But like every sports event, there’s winners and losers and some team fared better than others last night.

The 2019 NFL Draft is now in the books, and rookies are reporting to mini-camps in hopes of making a good first impression on their new teams. With a number of retirements, trades and free agent signings this offseason a number of teams had glaring holes entering draft night. Here are the teams that filled some of their needs for the 2019 season.

C: J.T. Realmuto, Phillies

The Phillies made a number of big moves this offseason, but the most important may be the trade with the Marlins for J.T. Realmuto. In a time where every team is looking for a consistent catcher, having a player like Realmuto behind the plate is a big boost to the Phillies. Last season the former third-round pick had a career year hitting .277/.340/.484 with 21 home runs and 74 RBIs. Leading all catchers with a 4.3 WAR, and playing at least 125 games each of the last four seasons, Realmuto will hope to build on his success in an offense that is loaded with talent.

We are now less than a month away from the NFL draft, one of the most exciting times of the football season. This draft hasn’t been regarded as one of the most talented in recent history, but there are some deep positions such as both the offensive and defensive line, as well as the secondary. It is easy for players to fall to later rounds due to testing, character issues, or being labeled a project. But some of these late sleepers will have the opportunity to prove their selection wrong and earn a sufficient role. Here are some players worth watching going into the NFL draft that might slip to later rounds.

1. Kevin Durant, UFA

2018-19 Stats: 27.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 5.7 apg

Kevin Durant caused a stir among the media awhile back when he was visibly upset when a reporter asked him about his silence in regards to his upcoming free agency. Durant has taken the LeBron approach by signing one-year deals with a player option for the second season with Warriors since his arrival in Golden State in 2016. Recent rumors have connected Durant to the New York Knicks as he may once again want to be the main guy on a team. The Knicks have opened up room for possibly two-max guys this offseason with the recent KP trade, opening way for Durant to team up with another star. KD is arguably one of the top-3 players in the league, continuing to put up great numbers for a team loaded with stars. Still regarded as one of the best scorers in the league, Durant will have plenty of suitors with offseason.

The NFL has always been a quarterback-driven league, dating all the way back to the beginning of its time. This was evident last year when five signal-callers were selected in April, the most since 1999 when five quarterbacks were drafted as well. Since 1999 the Cleveland Browns have drafted five quarterbacks in the first round, including Baker Mayfield, last year’s number one pick. Mayfield took the Browns from a zero win team to seven which showed drafting the right guy could change the team’s misfortune.

We are now in the final week of the NFL season, and it has been a year for big numbers, especially on the offensive end. Patrick Mahomes has taken the league by storm, Todd Gurley looks like the most complete back in the past few years, and Drew Brees is having a career year on the back end of 30.

Week 17 will be the final showcase for the league before the Associated Press votes on the league awards. Some of these races are closer than expected this season.

The NBA has a number of players that break out every year. We saw it last year with Victor Oladipo’s career resurgence in Indiana with the Pacers last season as a go-to option, or Clint Capela anchoring the inside for a Rockets team that lacked that inside presence.

The offseason has taken a new meaning for many players in today’s modern NBA, as players are working out together, sharing trainers, and taking on vigorous workout and meal plans. The game is everchanging, and if you don’t catch up, you will be left behind.

When comparing the best NBA draft classes of late, you hear praises for last seasons draft and the four All-NBA players in the 2012 draft. But one draft that hovers between talented and irrelevant, much like the players picked first and second overall took place in the summer of 2014.

They pretty much own a day of the week, their championship game is one of the most celebrated days of the year, and are considered one of, if not the most popular sport in America. However, the NFL continues to the trend of disappointing offseasons compared to leagues like the NBA and the MLB.

The difference between the NFL and their professional counterparts is one important factor: player mobility.
